Who We Are

The Master Gardener℠ volunteers of Wake County are a team of dedicated and certified individuals who use scientifically researched information to help fellow residents improve their home gardens and landscapes.

We have a broad spectrum of ages, life experiences, and educational backgrounds, which benefit us in serving diverse groups of Wake County residents.

There are currently 170 Master Gardener volunteers in Wake County, a number of whom have been with the program for over 20 years!

We enjoy meeting together each month to learn about research-based gardening topics and for fellowship.

There are many opportunities to make positive contributions as a Master Gardener volunteer. Some examples include:

Therapeutic Horticulture programs are held at retirement, special needs, and substance recovery facilities. Plants and plant-related activities are used to enhance the well-being of participants through their involvement.

Demonstration Gardens are maintained around the county. Some examples are Crowder Park Prairie Garden, State Fairgrounds WaterWise Garden, Lake Crabtree WaterWise Garden, and Wake Forest Historical Museum.

School Gardening opportunities are available on an ‘as requested’ basis. School personnel are instructed how to provide hands-on gardening experience for students.

Speakers Bureau provides horticulture education through presentations, talks and demonstrations at garden clubs, schools, community groups, public libraries, the JC Raulston Arboretum, and more.

Ask a Master Gardener volunteers staff booths at events where the community can ask garden-related questions. Examples include local Farmers Markets, the State Fair, the Southern Ideal Home Show, JC Raulston Arboretum events, Bugfest, Frogfest, Herbfest, and more.
